HOW TO RUN A FAIR INSTAGRAM GIVEAWAY
A step by step to make your giveaway clean and, above all, seen to be clean.
A giveaway on social media only works if people trust it. If it looks rigged, you don't just lose credibility: fewer people will join next time. The good news is that running a fair, provable giveaway is very easy if you follow a few steps. It works for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube or any network where you collect entrants.
1. Set the rules before you start
Before you post anything, make the conditions clear and stick to them strictly:
- What to do to enter (follow, comment, tag someone…).
- Start and end dates, with the time included.
- How many winners there are and what prize each one gets.
- How and when you'll announce the result.
Having the rules in writing protects you from misunderstandings and makes the giveaway look serious. Also check the legal requirements in your country and on the social network itself if the prize is significant.
2. Collect the entrants
When the deadline closes, make the list of who meets the conditions. The most common approach is to take everyone who commented. Copy them somewhere you can keep them one per line (a note or a spreadsheet). If your giveaway grants more than one entry per person (for example, one for each friend tagged), repeat their name as many times as they have entries: that way their chance rises fairly.
3. Pick at random, provably
This is the key to trust. Paste the list into a name draw and, before launching it, start recording your phone's screen. Run the draw with the recording going: that gives you a video proving the winner came up at random and you didn't touch anything. You can post that clip to your stories as proof. If you'd rather add some show, a wheel or the name slot machine do the same thing more spectacularly.
4. Prepare backups
Sometimes the winner doesn't reply or didn't meet a requirement. So you're not left stranded, draw two or three backups in the same draw and note them in order. If the first fails within a reasonable window (say, 48 hours), you move to the next. Write this rule down from the start so no one feels cheated.
5. Announce and deliver the prize
Post the winner as promised, ideally with the video of the pick. Contact the person by direct message and keep the delivery conversation. The more transparent you are throughout, the more you gain: people remember clean giveaways and come back to enter the next ones.
Mistakes to avoid
- Hand-picking the winner: it shows, and it kills your credibility.
- Changing the rules halfway through.
- Keeping no proof of the pick or the delivery.
- Promising deadlines you don't keep when announcing or delivering the prize.
A fair giveaway isn't more work: it's basically setting the rules, gathering the list and recording the moment you pick. In return, you earn your community's trust, which is what really grows an account.
