What is the bed picker for?

For that moment on every group trip: you arrive at the holiday home, the flat or the hostel and someone has to decide who sleeps in each bed. Add the people, the beds you have and how many spots each one has, and let luck decide.

Beds can have 1, 2 or 3 spots: single, double, bunk, sofa bed… If there are more people than spots, whoever does not fit sleeps on the floor: in a sleeping bag, on an air mattress or with just a blanket, at random. If there are spots left over, some bed keeps a free space.

How does it work?

When you press “Assign beds”, the page shuffles the spots and the list of people with the browser’s cryptographic generator and pairs them one by one, before the animation starts. Every spot has the same probability for everyone.

Then you see it one at a time: each person leaves the door, a marker hops across the free beds until it stops on theirs, and they jump in. In a hurry? Tap the scene and the draw speeds up.

What happens in each bed?

When a bed is full, the people in it react. If you have to share, you might get spooning, a sulk with a pillow wall in the middle, hearts under the blanket, a tug of war over the blanket or someone snoring while the other covers their face with a pillow.

Whoever sleeps alone in a double bed spreads out like a starfish, three in a bed are packed like sardines and those on the floor get all sorts: the cold, an ant, a deflating air mattress or a blanket too short for their feet. The reactions are random and just for fun: they do not change the result.

Ideas for using it

  • Holiday homes and rentals with friends or family.
  • Camps, hostels and school trips, with bunks and rooms.
  • Bachelor parties, festivals and weekends away with more people than beds.
  • The best bed: draw who gets it each night.

Frequently asked questions

Is the draw fair?

Yes. All spots and all people are shuffled with the browser’s cryptographic generator, so anyone can end up in any bed. The animation only shows a result that has already been decided.

What if there are more people than spots?

Whoever does not fit sleeps on the floor: in a sleeping bag, on an air mattress or with just a blanket, at random. The panel tells you beforehand how many spots are missing.

Can I add bunk beds or sofas?

Yes. Add each bunk bed as two 1-spot beds (top and bottom) and a sofa bed as a bed with 1 or 2 spots. You can name them however you like.

How many people and beds fit?

Up to 30 people and 12 beds with 1, 2 or 3 spots.

Can I keep a couple together?

There is no option to fix couples: the draw is the same for everyone. If a couple already has a bed, leave them out and draw the rest.

Are the lists saved?

The people are: they are saved in your browser even if you close the page, and they also show up in the other list games. The beds go back to the example when you reload. Nothing is sent to any server.

Can I use it for random room assignment?

Yes. Name each bed after its room (“Room 1”, “Attic”…) and set how many spots it has; the draw shares people out and you see who sleeps in each room.

Does it work for hostels, camps or big groups?

Yes. It fits up to 30 people and 12 beds of 1, 2 or 3 spots, so it works for a holiday rental, a hostel, a camp or a bachelor party. If you are more, draw by rooms or by groups.
