What is the random team generator?

The team generator splits a group of people into balanced teams completely at random. You type the list of participants, choose how many teams you want, and the tool distributes them at random, avoiding the usual "I pick first" arguments and favoritism when forming groups.

It is the quick solution to organize matches, activities or group work fairly.

When to use the team generator?

How does our generator work?

You enter the names and the number of teams, and the page shuffles the list at random with the browser’s pseudo-random generator before distributing the participants. The split is balanced in number and everyone has the same chance of ending up on any team.

The list stays in your browser and is not sent to any server.

Tips for genuinely balanced teams

The random split evens out the number of people per team, but it doesn't account for each person's skill level: in a match or a quiz, you sometimes want the teams to be even in ability. A simple trick is to group participants by level (for example, "strong" and "weak") and generate the split separately for each group, then spread them across the teams. Another option is to generate it several times until you're happy: since each run shuffles the list again, you get different combinations in seconds. And if you want captains, draw who leads each team first and let chance distribute the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Are the teams balanced in size?

Yes. The tool distributes participants as evenly as possible across the teams.

Is the split really random?

Yes. The list is shuffled at random, so no one has a fixed spot and each split is different.

How many teams can I create?

You can choose as many teams as your activity needs.

Are the names stored?

No. Everything happens in your browser and nothing is sent to our servers.

Can I make teams of different sizes?

The split aims for the greatest possible balance: if the number of people isn't divisible by the number of teams, some will have one person more than others, assigned at random. That way no one deliberately chooses who goes where.

Does it work for pairing up (pairs or trios)?

Yes. Choose as many teams as the pairs or trios you want, and the tool will split people into groups of that size. It's very handy for pairing up in icebreakers, games or exchanges.

What if someone can't be with a specific person?

The split is purely random and doesn't take "keep these two apart" rules. If you need to control a pairing, the easiest thing is to generate the split and, if a combination you don't want comes up, draw again until you get one that works.
